Here’s a full breakdown of main horseback riding options in Ensenada, La Mision & Valle de Guadalupe.
Best Horseback Riding Tours in Ensenada and La Mision
There are a few main areas where horseback riding is offered, and each one gives you a completely different experience.
Mountain Ranches for Cruise Excursion Groups
If you’re arriving on a cruise ship, you’ll probably see horseback riding tours offered through Carnival or Royal Caribbean. They actually go just north of town. These are typically large-scale operations designed to handle big groups. Big Ranch called Banditos does it, just before the tollbooth heading to Puerto Nuevo Lobster Village and overlooking our Ensenada Beach House Experience.
You’ll usually be transported by bus, ride in a line with many other people, and follow a set route. These tours are convenient and easy to book through cruise lines, but they tend to feel more like a packaged activity than a personal experience. They get good reviews.
They’re a decent option if you’re prefer to stay within the ship sponsored tours, but if you’re looking for something more authentic and don’t believe the hype that you will miss the boat (you won’t), there are better choices booking horseback direct with local team or on Viator an Get Your Guide.
Playa Hermosa Beach Horse Ride In Town
There are also horseback riding options right in Ensenada at Playa Hermosa. While the ocean views can be nice, this is a city beach, which means it can be crowded and not always the cleanest environment. You need to take Didi, taxi, or 25min walk to get there.
It’s convenient because it’s close to everything, but most visitors find that it’s not the most memorable horseback riding experience compared to other areas. Popular beach is crowded often and a bit chaotic for riding. This Ensenada Beach near port is actually best for Surfing lessons.
Playa La Mision Beach Ride
There are also horseback riding in Beautiful La Mision, where I first lived coming to Baja. Right off the highway, 45 min north of port, are horses.
Convenient, inexpensive. Not best treatment for horses. Far from port. Mostly best if you are coming to Valle from San Diego and want short snack / beach ride before checking in to your Valle place, or beach house.
Be aware not a great swimming beach due to rip tides.
This might be a good option for Bachelorette Party in Valle de Guadalupe to avoid the drive down to Bufadora, and could be a stop on a Baja Califonia Wine Tour for Day from TJ, or San Diego.
Nearby you can also find premium horseback options Baja by Horse with Marty is top choice and old friend I used to live by, she is pillar of that community and invited a natural horse trainer to spread natural horsemanship there. Marty runs private rides for small groups (up to 6 usually) looking for intimate experience. Both wil allow experienced riders to gallop. Horses by Jose has great horses and Beach. Neither has transport from Ensenada port last I checked, so to get there, our cruiseport private driver is option, or some custom combo quote. Day trips drown from San Diego to Valle/ La Mision can be arranged too.
👉 Best for: These premium places great for advanced riders coming from San Diego or Valle de Guadalupe not on ship schedule, or tight budget;)
👉 Why we recommend it: Better horses, safer setup, more authentic experience
The Best Horseback Riding Experiences for Cruisers: Beach and Echo Canyon
If you want the best horseback riding in Ensenada, you’ll want to head south of town. This is where you’ll find more scenic locations, better overall experiences, and more flexibility. They allow combo tours with Bufadora, Zipline, ATV, Kayak and are located close to port for those worried about getting back to ship.
Beach Horseback Near La Bufadora
One of the most popular horseback riding experiences in Ensenada is along the coast near La Bufadora and Playa La Jolla, in the Cabo Punta Banda community.
Here, you’ll ride right along the beach with wide-open ocean views, the sound of waves, and a much more natural setting than the in-town options. Most rides last between 45 minutes to an hour, making it a perfect activity to fit into your day.
This experience is especially popular with cruise visitors because it’s easy to combine with a visit to La Bufadora, local shops, and restaurants.
It’s relaxed, scenic, and great for photos — exactly what most people are looking for when they imagine horseback riding in Baja.
👉 Best for: First-time riders, couples, cruise visitors
👉 Bonus: Can be combined with La Bufadora blowhole visit, shopping, or food stops.
Also secret spots you can stick your feet in sand to find hot water geysyer under the water. But not a tub you can soak in, and varies with tides.
There a couple of ranches out there. Please keep in mind the inexpensive one that feeds cheap tours offered on shuttle buses from Ensenada port Las Dunas and Misionerso has lower standards for horses. We used that provider years ago, dropped after feedback about animal quality. Horses are out in heat roadside waiting. As part of our commitment to be better, we have different provider now.
Be mindful;)
If you are looking to visit a horse rescue, we know and have donated to Tina Jo’s Promise. Great people and members of the Punta Banda Community and a regular at Ensenada Massage.
Mountain Horseback Riding (Echo Canyon)
If you’re looking for something a little more peaceful and nature-focused, the mountain horse rides are our top recommendation. This horseback ride near Las Canadas, Ensenada, is also great for combos.
This area offers beautiful canyon landscapes, quiet trails, and a more immersive outdoor experience. It’s also one of the better options when it comes to safety and overall quality.
These tours provide helmets, and the environment is ideal for families and first-time riders. There’s even a fun feature where you can shout into the canyon and hear your voice echo back — something kids and adults both enjoy.
If you want a ride that feels less commercial and more like a genuine Baja experience, this is the one.
Our top recommended horseback experience.
Scenic trails through canyons and hills
Quiet, natural setting away from crowds
Helmets available (added safety)
Mounting Platform
Great for families and kids
👉 Best for: Families, beginners, nature lovers, cruise ship passengers
👉 Why we recommend it: Better horses, safer setup, more authentic experience
Valle de Guadalupe Horseback Experience (Wine Country)
For something truly unique, you can head out to Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico’s premier wine region.
Horseback riding here takes you through vineyards and rolling countryside, and it pairs perfectly with wine tasting and lunch experiences. In fact, about 85% of Mexico’s wine is produced in this region, so you’re getting more than just a ride — you’re getting a full experience.
This option is especially popular for couples staying the Valle de Guadalupe, celebrations, or anyone looking to do something a little different from the typical beach tour.
The route tends to be dusty and dry, and costs tend to be higher since you are in wine country. There are some great places there, but better places don’t take travelers as they cater to hotel or local private riders.
Further from Port, ha
👉 Best for: Couples, romantic getaways, unique experiences already in Valle de Guadalupe with a private tour, or doing Ensenada wine tour from port.
Fun fact:
Over 85% of Mexico’s wine is produced in Valle de Guadalupe

What to Expect During Your Ride
One of the most common questions we get is: Do you need experience to go horseback riding in Ensenada?
The answer is no. Recommended places here have mini lessons, safe geat, and trail horses.
Tours use well-trained trail horses that are used to following each other in a line. The rides are typically done at a walking pace, which makes them safe and accessible for beginners. Horses are not allowed to gallop, fastest a trot for safety.
In some smaller groups, you might get the chance to trot briefly, but generally speaking, these rides are designed to be relaxed and safe rather than fast-paced. Only a few premium places allow real trotting after they have vetted your experience, for your safety and horses.
Is Horseback Riding Good for Kids?
Absolutely.
Horseback riding is one of the best family-friendly activities in Ensenada. Most providers allow children around 5 to 7 years old to ride their own horse, while younger kids can ride with an adult. See our Things to do in Ensenada for kids.
The horses are calm, the pace is slow, and the experience is designed to be enjoyable for all ages. It’s a great way for families to spend time outdoors together.
Safety and Important Tips
Safety standards can vary depending on the provider, so it’s important to choose carefully.
Some tours provide helmets, while others do not. Guides are always present, but in some locations they may be walking guides rather than riding alongside you, and English levels can vary.
The good news is that horseback riding in Ensenada is very safe with right providers. These horses do the same routes every day, and incidents are extremely rare.
Getting to Your Horseback Riding Tour
Transportation is something many visitors overlook.
Some tours include pickup from your hotel or cruise port, while others require you to arrange your own transportation. If you’re coming from San Diego or staying in Valle de Guadalupe, there are also private tour options available.
Planning this part ahead of time makes a big difference in how smooth your day goes.

ANIMAL WELFARE: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
This is one of the most common (and valid) concerns travelers have. Traveling in Baja, you will see many animals are treated differetntly than in US. This is a cultural difference. Equally dogs are treated more like guard dogs as well to alert of visitors.
Roadside trail horses in Rosarito, Playa La Mision and some beach side in Playa La Jolla Area and Playa Hermosa do not have much shade.
We work with providers that have Animal Welfare policies and rest their horses. We learned from our mistakes that less expensive is not best. I even tried to help a provider improve but was not able to influence the situation so we changed.
This is also why we are not the most inexpensive. In general, if the horses are standing on roadside for a long time in heat, this suggests a less than healthy environment.
I (@jesseinensenada) learned this lesson the hard way. After working with one playa La Jolla partner for years and trying to help them improve, we upgraded to more expensive partner after getting feedback from cruisers they preferre to pay more for better experience.
The reality is: horse care can vary depending on the provider.
Here’s how to evaluate what you’re seeing:
✅ Signs of Well-Cared-For Horses
Horses look alert and responsive
Healthy weight (not overly thin)
Clean tack (saddle, reins in good condition)
Handlers are attentive and not rushing
⚠️ Things to Watch For
Very low energy or unresponsive horses
Worn or poorly maintained equipment
Overcrowded groups with little supervision
Untrained guides (in attentive teens)
Important Context
Many horses in Baja are working animals, not show horses.
That means:
They may look leaner than what you’re used to in the U.S.
They are typically trained for calm, beginner-friendly rides
Bottom Line
Most experiences are safe and enjoyable—but if animal care is a top priority for you, it’s worth choosing a provider known for:
Smaller groups
More attentive handling
Consistent reviews mentioning horse condition
Why Choosing the Right Tour Matters
The biggest difference between a good horseback riding experience and a great one in Ensenada comes down to:
Group size
Horse quality
Location
Overall organization
That’s why we focus on working with providers we trust and helping match each guest with the right option for their trip.

Viator and Get Your Guide have options if you love apps. We have a few of our tour listed there. Ship Sponsored excursions have horseback options. I have not heard any complaints. I know from my carnival cruise they are pushing the excrusions from the moment I bought the ticket. And they tell you you will miss the ship if you choose local povider (not true in Ensenada and I don’t think that is case in Cabo or Catalina either)

THE TRUTH ABOUT HORSEBACK RIDING IN ENSENADA (WHAT MOST PEOPLE DON’T REALIZE)
Before you book, it helps to go in with the right expectations.
Most Rides Are Walking Pace (Not Galloping)
For safety reasons, the majority of tours:
Stay at a walk
Occasionally a slow trot
If you’re expecting to run freely on the beach—that’s rare and usually only for experienced riders in very controlled situations.
Equipment (Tack) Varies
Some setups are:
Well-maintained and comfortable
Others:
More basic and functional
This doesn’t always mean unsafe—but expectations should match the environment.
Transportation Is the Biggest Factor (Especially for Cruise Guests)
The ride itself might be 45–60 minutes…
…but getting there can take:
15 minutes (Playa Hermosa)
25-30 min (Beach Bufadora and Mountain Echo Canyon)
55–65 minutes (La Mision or Valle)
If you only have a few hours, this matters more than people think.
If you are not on ship, you don’t have this issue, and you can easily drive your self or get a Private transportation options in Baja and Valle de Guadalupe.
🎯 The “Best” Option Depends on Your Situation
There is no universal best ride.
It depends on:
How much time you have
Whether you want beach vs vineyard vs trail
How important scenery vs convenience is
If you go in expecting:
A relaxed, scenic ride
Beginner-friendly horses
A unique Baja experience
You’ll likely love it.
If you expect:
High-speed riding
Luxury ranch-level setups everywhere
You may want to be more selective about where you book.
